The Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a leading contender for the NPP’s flagbearer position for 2024, Honourable Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has asked proponents of the claim that the NPP comes from the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition to desist from making those claims.
According to the legislator, those making such claims make it seem as if the NPP belongs to a group of people coming from a certain lineage and if that is the case then they should inform him and others like him who are not part of any of the traditions to leave the party.
Kennedy Agyapong said the NPP has been built up by a multitude of people, including many like himself who don’t belong to any of those so-called traditions.
The incendiary politician wondered where the Danquah-Busia-Dombo people were when he was once facing treason charges.
“We have a lot of young men in this party who do not even know the history; they don’t even know if they affiliate with Danquah-Busia-Dombo. Those of us who do not affiliate with the group, what are we supposed to do?
“We have contributed immensely to this party; it is not a fair statement at all to anyone. It discourages us from sacrificing our money and our lives. I have been charged with treason where was Dombo? They should stop this kind of thing and move the party forward,” he said.
Recently, former NPP Parliamentary candidate for Kpone Katamanso, Hopeson Adorye, re-sparked the Danquah-Busia-Dombo debate when he said that the NPP flagbearer position is always for someone from the Danquah/Busia camp and the running mate position is always for a Dombo.
Kennedy Agyapong, who is hoping to be flagbearer yet not belonging to either faction, said the party doesn’t belong to any family and if it is indeed a family affair, then people like him should be told so they advise themselves.
“Some of their statements dampen our spirits; they are making it seem the NPP is a family party. If it is, then they should tell us so we can advise ourselves, and they should remember the members who played key roles in the party to build the party,” he added.
Kennedy Agyapong is expected to be a strong contender for the NPP flagbearer race when the elections come off later this year.
Aside from the Assin Central legislator, other top contenders are expected to be Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten.
