The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia and her Foundation, the Samira Empowerment & Humanitarian Projects-SEHP, carried out a donation exercise to some schools in the Eastern Region.
As part of her Library-in-a-Box Project. a select number of basic schools in the New Juaben north and New Juaben south municipalities of the region received a cache of reading materials from the foundation.
The Second Lady encouraged the students to read the books both at school and at home, adding that it would enlighten them and open doors of opportunities for them in the future.
“I really know that growing up, it is the books that helped me to become who I am currently. Books will help you to learn about the world you have not travelled to. It will help you too to learn about societies you don’t know about. It’s your passport into the world,” she stated.
Mrs Bawumia added: “If you open a book and you read about it, you can learn and aspire to achieve that objective.”
The Second lady also called on teachers of the schools to share the books with the children to enjoy and that they are not for ‘decoration’ purposes.
“I want you to share it with them, read it with them, create a library space for them and also create a reading time for them.
“You will become somebody in the future if you stick to your books. As teachers, we must learn to encourage the children to read the books,” she stated.
The “library-in-a-box” project forms part of the Second Lady’s quest to improve the reading skills of schoolchildren at the basic school level.
Her latest donation took her to the Police Basic School, Trinity Presby Model School, Apimpoa Islamic Basic School, Effiduase Presby School and the Oyoko Methodist School in the New Juaben South and North Municipalities in the Eastern Region.
Since its inception in 2017, the project has already distributed more than 200,000 such books to 68 basic schools in the country.
Under the project, boxes filled with storybooks for different levels are distributed to the schools with the aim of expanding access and closing the literacy gap in basic schools throughout the country.
Library-in-a-Box continues to encourage reading habits and literacy in schools with the aim of improving learning outcomes.
