Professor Ransford Gyampo, a lecturer at the political science department of the University of Ghana has said, the delegation of Oyerepa Fm are to be blamed for the shutdown of the radio station for being weak.
The radio station was directed to shut down by Manhyia after a delegation of the station appeared before the chiefs over comments Akwasi Addai Odike make which they deem unacceptable.
However, in a facebook post by the political science lecturer, the chiefs have no power to shut down any radio station as Ghana is not running a system that grants them that power to do.
“Ghana isn’t a monarchy. Chiefs can’t shut down radio stations,” Ransford Gyampo said.
He continued that, the chief only made the suggestion to the managers of the radio station and such orders were followed out of fear.
“They only suggested the shutdown and the owners accepted it with alacrity, out of fear. Any blame should be laid at the doorstep of the radio station owners for being weak.”
Why the shutdown orders
The leader of United Progressive Party(UPP) criticized the chiefs of the ashanti region for being involved in galamsey on Oyerepa FM, comments that were deemed unpalatable and dent on the image of manhyia.
The political activist and leader of UPP also asked the youth to rise up and demonstrate against chiefs if the rulers would not make their stance known about the fight against illegal mining (galamsey)
The station Oyerepa FM, according to the acting president of the Kumasi Traditional Council, who also doubles as Bantamahene, Baffour Amankwatia VI, allowed the founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai ‘Odike’ to use their airwaves to berate the chiefs.
Amankwatia VI gave the orders when a delegation from Oyerepa Radio and TV appeared before the traditional council to render an apology over the comments made by Odike.
