The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says the party is planning to conquer the Ashanti Region as the key to winning back the Presidency in 2024.

According to the veteran politician, popularly known as General Mosquito, no party in Ghana can win an election without a strong performance in the Ashanti Region.

He said the NPP won the 201/6 and 2020 elections on the back of a strong performance in the region. Likewise, the NDC lost because of a poor performance in the Ashanti Region.

Asiedu Nketia made his analysis during an appearance on the ‘Dwabrem‘ show on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 Fm, on Friday, August 19th 2022.

“Without the Ashanti region, there is no way the NDC can win any general election in the country. It is well observed from the data from 2020 polls that the percentage that the NDC got in the Ashanti region was low leading to our downfall,” he stated.

He added, “Whether you like it or not, there is no way that New Patriotic Party (NPP) could have won power in this country without the massive contribution from the loving people from the Ashanti region.

“It is not possible, because if you compare the percentage of votes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) got from the Ashanti region, it cannot be compared to other regions, you could clearly see that Ashanti region alone contributed a lot in the 2016 general election which led to the victory of the New Patriotic party and I strongly believe the same assertion goes to the NDC.”

Asiedu Nketia said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are hence going to concentrate heavily on improving their performance in the Ashanti Region in upcoming elections.

That, he said, would be the key to winning back political power in 2024.

“I can therefore say that Ashanti Region is the heart of all political parties in the country.” Nketia concluded.
