New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament has accused Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and Bulk Distribution Companies (BDCs) for making abnormal profits at the expense of Ghana in the ongoing global economic difficulties.
The MP who serves on the Mines and Energy Committee in parliament believes the OMCs and BDCs could do more to cushion Ghanaians from the excruciating economic crisis.
He says the Oil Marketing Companies and Bulk Distribution Companies are largely to be blamed for the current prices in fuel as they are trying to make huge profits as he concedes the performance of the cedi has not been helpful.
“It’s the OMCs, the big ones and the BDCs. I have a problem and they better sort it out well. They for the dollar at whatever rate so somebody should pay for… I am concerned that some OMCs are make unnecessary profits and I think we should be careful how they are also playing the market, we are in this together.” He said.
According to him, he believes the president intervention to secure petroleum product for the local market is a good decision as he oppose the operations of the BDCs.
“President has travelled out of the country many times and sent out a delegation to make that in the very short time we would be have to flood the market with some petroleum products. I am not happy with the way the BDCs are going about this situation.” He stressed.
However, he conceded the country is in a difficult situation and though the situation is not peculiar to Ghana, he appreciates the sacrifices Ghanaians are making.
“It is a particularly difficult situation and I do not envy the lot. Those who are really having to juggle.”
“It’s not a situation peculiar to Ghana. We have heard about the situation in Sri Lanka. It is a redeeming situation for those of us in Ghana. At least, we are not in long queues. Oil producing countries like Nigeria and others are all in queues, we are not.” He added.
Currently, at the fuel pumps, diesel is being sold for more than ¢23 whilst petrol is selling at ¢18.
