The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has warned the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, to be more measured in her utterances regarding issues of Ghanaian import.
Speaking on the Multimedia Group-owned television station Joy Prime, Awuku expressed displeasure at recent comments from the diplomat regarding the conduct of the Ghanaian government.
Awuku said there is a code that diplomats have to adhere to and the UK high commissioner flouted it with her utterances.
“Sometimes I beg to differ with the way she also expresses her opinion. That doesn’t mean that we are gagging people. But I think that there’s definitely a code as well for diplomats and I think sometimes she might also be a bit cautious with the way she interferes in the governance process of the country,” he said on Monday.
“She is been very eloquent in interfering in the governance process of a country…once she begins to also express these opinions, they are good, but it’s important that she also becomes very balanced in what’s also happening back home in our country.”
Awuku was responding after the UK High Commissioner said in an interview that the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, must cut down on expenditure to show solidarity with Ghanaians in a difficult time.
In a clap back, the former National Organiser of the NPP said the issues the diplomat are raising are not exactly unique to Ghana but in fact, the same is happening back in the UK.
“She’s talking about cutting down costs, which I also find very interesting which is so good for the midst of this UK is also investing more in ammunition to support Ukraine, to the detriment of the British people, who are also feeling the pinch,” Awuku added.
