A former Deputy Attorney General, Joseph Dindiok Kpemka, has warned the NPP to shed their ‘Akan’ party tag by ensuring Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the party’s flagbearer at its upcoming primaries.
According to Kpemka, Bawumia is a perfect candidate who possesses all qualities a President needs hence the party can easily choose him irrespective of his tribe.
He said such a choice would forever shut up critics of the party who insist that the party is tribalistic and only caters to Akans but snubbing him would confirm all the negative accusations.
The ruling New Patriotic Party has two prominent factions, the Ashantis and the Akyems, who seemingly rotate as leaders of the party. Unlike the NDC, which has had Presidential candidates from the Volta, Northern and other Regions, the NPP’s flagbearers are always Akans.
Critics say the party is tribalistic in its outlook and Kpemka says this is the perfect opportunity to shut up those critics.
He said in this context, snubbing Bawumia would confirm every criticism of tribalism and bigotry lobbied by the NDC against the party.
“For me, because of the future of myself and many of the people from our part of the country, because of the future of our children and children’s children especially in the party, then the NPP will have to have a rethink. You know that in our part of the country you go to places to campaign and they tell you it is Akans party. This is a fine opportunity to kill it or confirm it,” he said in an interview on Bolgatanga-based Dreamz Fm’s State of Our Nation.
He explained that his support for the Vice President, together with thousands of other party members is not only because Dr Bawumia hails from the north, but also because he is competent and has justified his abilities to be President of the republic.
“I have no doubt in my mind that it is going to be a resounding victory for Dr Bawumia,” he added.
