Onua TV broadcast journalist, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has been released on bail after being picked up by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) late Wednesday, October 19th 2022.
Officers of the NIB reportedly picked up Smart whilst on the way home from work in a ‘Rambo-style arrest’.
He was whisked away to an unknown location and interrogated, after which he was released following intense pressure from his employers, Media General, and the public.
Captain Smart was arrested following comments he passed about the alleged involvement of President Nana Akufo-Addo in galamsey.
He said during a broadcast that President Akufo-Addo is a shareholder in galamsey activities in Ghana.
Following his comments, the ministry of information issued a statement condemning his comments whilst categorically denying there is any semblance of truth in them.
The statement added that Captain Smart, Onua TV and Media General will be reported to the National Media Commission for unprofessional conduct.
However, things escalated Wednesday after NIB officials arrested the broadcaster.
A team of operatives reportedly crossed his car in traffic around Kawukudi in Accra, forcing him to a stop and carting him away to an undisclosed location.
He was later discovered in the Interrogation Unit of the Bureau, where he was sharply questioned over his comments.
This is hardly Smart’s first rodeo with law enforcement, as the Ghana Police Service arrested him in December 2021, similarly for his commentary on national issues.
At the time, the Police said his arrest was due to “some unsavoury pronouncements that hinge on peace and security,”
