One of the conveners of the Fix the Country movement, Olivia Barker-Vormawor, has reacted to the arrest of Onua TV journalist, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
In a post on social media, Barker-Vormawor said Smart’s arrest is just the latest indication of President Akufo-Addo’s intolerance for press freedom.
He added that the President is essentially “begging to be overthrown at this point”.
His comments are sure to spark controversy, considering he has been in trouble multiple times in the past for speaking about a coup d’etat of the Akufo-Addo government.
On the night of Wednesday, October 19th 2022, news emerged that Captain Smart had been arrested by the NIB.
The arrest came after the ministry of information issued a statement condemning comments allegedly made by Captain Smart on Media General’s Onua TV to the effect that President Akufo-Addo is a shareholder in galamsey activities in Ghana.
While denying the claims, the government statement noted that Captain Smart, Onua TV and Media General will be reported to the National Media Commission for unprofessional conduct.
Reacting to the arrest, Barker-Vomawor wrote: “Captain Smart arrested violently by National Security over broadcast pointing the finger at the President for his involvement in and indulgence of Galamsey. This short man is just begging to be overthrown at this point.”
“Because this issue keeps coming up every now and then, I want to be as clear as possible. I have no desire for Akufo-Addo to be kicked out through a coup d’etat! That will be ending our makeshift democracy. He is not worth the price. But he doesn’t deserve to end his term too. So What I want is for him to either be forced to resign through street protests and agitations; or impeached by Parliament. These are things that affirm our democracy not destroy it. Democracy is important to me! And it will be a huge coup to force him out of office that way,” he added in clarification of his earlier post.
Barker-Vormawor is currently before the courts over a post claiming he will stage a coup if the E-Levy was passed.
