Dr Richard Amoako Baah, a political scientist, has opined that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is jeopardising the future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with his comments on people in the Ashanti Region who threatened not to vote for him if their needs are not met.
Speaking during a recent interview on Otec Fm, Akufo-Addo said no one can threaten him with their votes and if people don’t want to vote for the NPP because their roads have not been done then “it is your choice and that is not my problem,”
But reacting to the President’s comments, Dr Amoako Baah said Akufo-Addo is being reckless and arrogant because he doesn’t have to stand for re-election anymore, but he’s putting the chances of his party in jeopardy by coming off as uncaring.
“This is not the first time the President has spoken this way and it is precisely because he is not running for re-election…what he is doing is endangering the fortunes of the NPP in 2024 as if he has no stake in it, so he is saying anything. He said it several times, it is not good,” Dr. Amoako Baah explained.
He observed that Akufo-Addo before becoming a President was speaking to Ghanaians to try him but, “this same person is the one talking like this now, it is not appropriate.”
The President sparked off a firestorm with seemingly arrogant comments during his interview on Otec Fm as part of his four-day working visit to the Ashanti Region.
After a listener sent in a text message complaining about untarred roads in the townships of Kwabre and Manso and warned that they will abandon the NPP if the roads are not done, the President expressed little concern.
“People make those kinds of threats; they don’t frighten me. Somebody votes for you, and somebody supports you. It’s because they want you to do certain things for them. I understand that. But there is no need for people to say that if I am unable to do this and that… those are their own issues to deal with. Of course, I will do it (the road),” he said.
“But if it comes to the election and you choose to vote for the NDC, that is your own issue that is not my worry because nobody holds your thumb to vote; it is your own work. The important thing is that I understand my responsibility, and we will deal with it,” the president said during an interview on Kumasi-based Otec FM.
