The National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Mark Ewusi Arkoh has described the new farm gate prices for cocoa beans as an “insult” to farmers.
According to a statement signed by the National Youth Organizer, the government increment is inadequate.
He said, the least government should have given was 40% increase in producer price looking at the economic condition and prices of goods in the country due to high fuel cost.
“The difficulty in the economic system which is sustained by the high cost of products and the continuous increase in petroleum products should have compelled the cocoa board to increase the price of cocoa for the 2022/2023 cocoa season to at least 40%. This would have brought up cocoa prices to a minimum of GHS 925.00 instead of GHS 800.00” the statement said.
“It is a very insulting and disrespectful gesture for cocoa farmers to sell their cocoa beans at GH¢800.00 per cocoa sack,” the party said in a statement signed and Mark Ewusi Arkoh on Thursday, October 6, 2022
The party has therefore served a notice to the government to review the cocoa price upwards, which failure to do that, according to them will give incentives to farmers to sell their cocoa farms to galamsey operators.
