One of the suspects in the trial of Chinese galamsey queen, Aisha Huang has collapsed in front of the judge.
Aisha and three others are facing trial for illegal gold mining in court.
They were last week remanded to reappear today.
In court today, state prosecutors told the circuit court that Aisha fled the country the last time she was arrested in 2018.
All these while, the information government provided to the nation was that Aisha was deported. Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Mafo in 2018 justified the purported deportation saying it was necessary to protect Ghana – China relations.
Later in 2019, President Akufo-Addo conceded that with the benefit of hindsight, her deportation was an error.
However, just yesterday, the president said he was not sure if Aisha was deported or if she fled.
This got many analysts wondering if the president receives daily security briefings.
The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah explaining the president’s comments said, Aisha was not deported but rather repatriated. According to him, president’s statement that he was not sure if she was deported or she fled was “a figure of speech”
In court today, lawyer for Aisha Huang, Capt. Nkrabea Effah Darteh said the state prosecutors told the court that Aisha sneaked out of the country, a claim he vehemently denied.
He was also concerned that the Attorney General at the recent Bar Conference in Ho requested the the collaboration of the judiciary for a successful prosecution of Aisha.
He described it as very worrying.
Meanwhile, the pleas of the suspects were taken today, but were once again denied bail.
Captain Effah Darteh believes the refusal of the bail could be as a result of “the judicial collaboration” the Attorney General requested.
