Former Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Dr. William Samoei Ruto on his election as President of Kenya.
In a facebook post, Mr. Mahama wrote
“As bearer of the trust of the Kenyan people, as affirmed in a clear, transparent manner by the Supreme Court, this is the time to unite the good people of Kenya for continued growth and prosperity.”
The former president said he has every confidence that Mr. Ruto will deliver on his mandate to the people.
He concludes by wishing him a successful and impactful tenure as President of Kenya.
Kenyans went to the polls on 9th August to elect a new president and members of Parliament. Incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta was disqualified from contesting having reached his maximum two terms, but he threw his weight behind opposition candidate Raila Odinga.
Opinion polls predicted a slight win for Odinga against out-of-favour Ruto in what was expected to be a close contest.
Six days after the election, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared Ruto as the outright winner with a little over 50 percent of valid votes cast.
Odinga who was contesting for the 5th time rejected the results and headed to the Supreme Court for nullification of the results.
The court yesterday however upheld Ruto’s victory paving the way for him to be sworn in as the next president of Kenya.
