The Local Government and Rural Development Minister Dan Kwaku Botwe says the media should urge the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to come out with policy alternatives.
According to the Local Government Minister, the NDC has been lazy and lacks the capacity to come out policies that will inure to the benefit of Ghanaians.
Challenging the media to be proactive in asking for policy alternatives rather than just allowing them to be party in opposition who criticizes government, Mr. Botwe said,
“I’ve mentioned from President Kuffour’s time policies that didn’t exist that we brought. We brought school feeding, health insurance, LEAP we brought it. What alternative do you have for this country? Have you people asked them [NDC]”?
The Minister in buttressing his point enumerated further some policies the current administration is delivering on while asking what the alternative policies are from the opposition.
” This time around we brought 1D1F, free SHS, one district one factory, you saw the agenda 111. Tell me beyond brick and mortar…If you take taxes from the people you will certainly construct roads and also build schools. That one almost every government will do that. I’m talking about ideas, social intervention policies. We have challenged them to point to one, they’ve never been able to bring any policy. They are in opposition, they have all the time still nothing”.
Stating the core functions of a political party, the Minister said, the party is not only there to win election but come out with policies that will change lives of the people.
“We are not an electoral Machine. The party does not exist to win only elections. We formed the party to churn out programmes and policies that will change the lives of people. Regularly we were coming out with ideas. Regularly sector by sector we were holding press conferences.
Those who are in opposition now, have you heard that they have organized any press conference to provide any alternative policy? Yet you the media haven’t challenged them. They have been in power and want to come again.” He added.
