The National Democratic Congress(NDC) is demanding the withdrawal of Military personnel from the Lower Manya and Yilo Krobo Areas.
This is after the leadership of the Party paid a working visit to the area om Friday, August 26, 2022 as part of their ongoing membership drive campaign in the Eastern Region.
The party leadership in a statement signed by the Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, indicated that they are concerned at how the process which could have been smooth degenerated into chaos, leading to loss of lives and property.
Blaming the government, he insinuated that the cause of the chaos is as a result of mismanagement by the Akufo-Addo government, Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the statement said,
“We hold the view that the military-backed forced installation of the prepaid meters in the area without proper community engagement and sensitization was completely unnecessary.”
Also the statement read in portions that, “The recent crisis has brought economic activities in the Krobo area to a half and exacerbated the hardships the people in the area are already reeling under. Hospitals were forced to shut down leading to loss of lives, while schools, businesses and households all bore the brunt of the nearly one-month freeze on electricity supply to these areas,”
The Party sympathized with them and condemned the government approach in dealing with the issue as they accuse the government of using brute force and high-handedness in dealing with citizens of the area.
“We sympathize with the residents of these communities who have been at the receiving end of such mistreatment by the government through its agents.
Calling on government to withdraw security personnel from the two towns, the statement added,
We call on government to, as a matter of urgency to withdraw all military personnel who have been deployed to the Krobo area in order to ease the unnecessary tension and give way for citizens to go about their normal lives freely.
