The first son of the late Mion Lana, Naa Mahamudu Abdulai V, has been installed as regent of the Mion skin following the tragic passing of his father.
Naa Alhassan Abdulai was installed in a ceremony held at the Mion Palace on Friday, August 26th 2022.
He was made to don a warrior’s smock and underwent all the necessary traditional rites leading to being declared the occupant of the Mion skin.
The Chairman of the Funeral Committee from the Abudu Royal Family, Dr. Mahama Natogmah, told Journalists that the newly installed Mion regent will take over Mion and its surroundings.
His reign will be temporary, lasting until his late father’s funeral rites are completed for a substantive Mion-Lana to be installed.
“He will take care of Mion until the final funeral rites of his late father are performed then the Ya Na will get us a substantive Mion Lana to come and take over the Chieftaincy title,” he said.
Hundreds of Dagbon subjects reportedly trooped to the Mion Palace to witness the installation of a new regent.
Mion Lana passes away
The heir apparent to the Dagbon skin, Naa Mahamadu Abdulai, died after a short illness on Wednesday, August 17th 2022.
Naa Mahamadu Abdulai was Mion Lana, Chief of Mion and heir apparent to the skin of Yaa Naa Abukari II under the rotational system employed by the Dagbon kingship.
He was enskinned as Mion Lana on 3rd March 2019, at the Gbewa Palace in Yendi following the ascension of Yaa Naa Abukari II as the Overlord of Dagbon.
He was born Mahamadu Abdulai in 1974, the first son of the late Ya Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV who was the Overlord of Dagbon from 1969 to 1974.
Abdulai leaves behind four wives and 12 children.
He has been buried in Sambu, the traditional capital of Mion in line with Dagbon custom and tradition.
