The police in the Northern Region have commenced investigation into attacks on the NDC office in the regional capital, Tamale.
Some youth in the Tamale metropolis believed to be members of the party yesterday vandalised the party’s Regional Office. Their action is in protest of a decision to let one of the party’s Vice Chairmen, Mr. Ali Adolf act as Regional Chairman.
The party’s leadership in the Region took a decision that Mr. Adolf acts in the interim following the death of the party’s Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila.
Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila died on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at the Tamale Teaching Hospital after a short illness.
His Islamic Adua was held on Sunday, August 21, 2022 and graced by the party’s 2020 presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and other dignitaries.
According to sources, the youth arrived at the party office and ordered the workers to leave. They then locked up the place and later vandalised chairs and other properties of the party.
Videos circulating on social media show the youth, who arrived at the party office on motor bikes, fired gun shots amidst the commotion, demanding that Ahmed Rufai Vellim rather be allowed to act as Regional Chairman of the party.
The regional secretary of the NDC, Mohammed Abdul Salam said a formal complaint has been made at the regional police headquarters. Though no arrests has been made yet, Salam said some of the people in the videos can be easily identified. According to him, none of the perpetrators will be shielded. Salam also stated that the rules were followed in appointing Ali Adolf to act as regional chairman.
The NDC is the process of reconstituting its executives at the different levels. It has commenced branch elections to be followed by constituency and after which regional and national officers will be elected. The ultimate is the election of a flagbearer.
