President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised to put an end to the menace of galamsey during a meeting with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The President visited Manhyia Palace on Sunday, October 17th 2022 the beginning on his four-day official visit to the Ashanti Region.
Nana Akufo-Addo said no government in history as done as much as his administration to fight galamsey and that they are willing to go to all lengths to bring an end to it.
“We are here to eradicate galamsey and surely, it would be eradicated. No government has shown that resilience in the fight against galamsey,” President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when he called on the Asantehene,
He indicated further “one issue that has generated negative public criticism is galamsey. Though it attracted less public discussion before my tenure, it is the talk of the town, even among traditional leaders. This means the issue is common and calls for all hands on deck to bring it to an end.”
His reassurance comes following the recent meeting between the President and the National House of Chiefs, also held at Manhyia Palace.
During that meeting, the President also called for them all to come on deck to fight the menace.
He said he had put his Presidency on the line in the fight and indeed lost seats in the 2020 elections due to galamsey.
“It has not been easy, it has not been popular, and we have not got the immediate results that I was looking for. Indeed, in the last elections of 2020, my stance on the issue cost my party and me significant losses in the mining communities. It turned out that my statement that I was putting my presidency on the line in the fight against galamsey was neither bombast nor recklessness. It was the simple truth,” he said.
“It can only succeed if it is a truly national battle, which no one seeks to exploit for political gain, as we saw in the last election. The progress of our country depends on all of us, all citizens of Ghana, all Fellow Ghanaians, pulling together to defeat this existential threat to our future,” he added.
