A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team in the Ashanti region, Archibald Ntiri Acquah Gyasi has described the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) so-called membership drive in the Ashanti Region as a ‘funfair’ and ‘fallacy’.
Speaking in an interview on Ultimate Fm, he said the reason party executives stormed the Ashanti Region was for their own selfish interests and not for a membership drive as has been reported.
He said the real reason for convening on the Ashanti Region was to continue the apparent power struggle in the party between General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia aka General Mosquito and National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
“The NDC were not in the region to do any registration, they were here for power struggle, the Asiedu Nketia camp came and Ofosu Ampofo camp came so all that they were doing in the region was to make sure that as a region that was going to procure a significant number of votes for their national elections, they wanted to put themselves right in the eyes of the would be delegates,” he said.
‘‘So Caesar when you go to areas, while the Ofosu Ampofo camp is supplying water , the Asiedu Nketia camp is coming with lunch, that is what was happening, they were not concentrating on any registration. The regional leaders aligned themselves with winnable candidates, so there were lot of issues.
‘‘Why did they use the party structure, why even bring Accra to Kumasi, when there is supposed to be a structure in the region? All they needed to do is to organize some orientation and some training so that all they wanted to achieve done but not for national executives to hijack the process for their own interest’,” he continued.
Opining further, Archibald Gyasi said NDC party communicators in the region are peeved these things were allowed to go on.
‘‘Most of my friends from the NDC communication team, felt aggrieved because they felt this was the time for them to make some money, because they have been abandoned for some time and so for a project like this, if you are going to be a supervisor somewhere or going to be an officer some were you may end up getting something little, the Accra people came and took all the per diem away.
‘‘You go to a constituency and you hear Fred Arbenyo is heading here, you go to another constituency, then you hear Betty Mould is here … so the real structure that was to do this was abandoned, they felt crestfallen’’, he claimed.
The NDC recently embarked on a membership drive in the Ashanti Region to boost its numbers ahead of the 2024 elections.
General Secretary Asiedu Nketia recently said the NDC cannot win the 2024 elections unless they significantly increase their vote share in the Ashanti Region.
