A former Nigerian senator who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, Shehu Sani, has attacked Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, after his call for African countries to stop begging international agencies for money.
According to Sani, Akufo-Addo is hypocritically begging for money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) whilst at the same time telling other African countries to do something different.
“Ghana’s President is collecting IMF loan with the right hand and using the left hand to warn African Governments against begging the west for money,” Shehu Sani slammed Nana Addo on Twitter.
His comments come after President Nana Akufo-Addo, speaking at the opening of the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington DC, urged African countries to stop begging foreign countries for aid.
Ghana’s President said that is the surest way to earn the respect of foreign countries.
“If we stop being beggars and spend African money inside the continent, Africa will not need to ask for respect from anyone, we will get the respect we deserve. If we make it prosperous as it should be, respect will follow,” Akufo-Addo said.
“Africans are more resilient outside the continent than inside. We must bear in mind that to the outside world, [there’s] nothing like Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, we are simply Africans. Our destiny as people depends on each other,” he said.
Ironically, Nana Akufo-Addo’s remarks were delivered on the same day, Tuesday, December 13th 2022, that Ghana announced reaching a staff-level agreement with the IMF for a $3bn credit facility.
The agreement went completely against Akufo-Addo’s comments, the irony which the Nigerian senator highlighted in his tweet.
