Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cried out that the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, was warned not to contest him for the good of the party but selfishly refused to listen.
According to Ofosu-Ampofo, party leaders and elders, including former President and presumptive flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, all advised Asiedu Nketia not to stir division by contesting Ofosu-Ampofo.
However, the notorious General Mosquito completely refused to listen to reason.
Ofosu-Ampofo made his revelation during an interview with Adom Fm.
“For me and in my thoughts, the General Secretary contesting me was not necessary. We all are in different positions and we all have our strengths and weaknesses. This move was a wrong move. It was not a politically correct decision. Someone may pursue his personal interest but we must look at the larger interest of the party,” he said.
Mr Ampofo added: “There were moves the Council of Elders. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama also made some moves. Elder called him [Asiedu Nketiah] and spoke to him over a year ago and the General Secretary said he had not taken a decision and that he had options. There were moves and every effort was made to prevent this from happening but as it is said, you can force a donkey to the Riverside but you cannot be force it to drink,”
The titanic battle between Ofosu-Ampofo and Asiedu Nketia has been described by political experts as having the potential to destabilise the NDC as the party prepares to wrestle power from the NPP in 2024.
Despite these concerns, Asiedu Nketia has dismissed them, saying the whole essence of democracy is people standing for elections and challenging each other.
According to him, for all the years he was General Secretary, other people contested him and he never made any fuss about it.
