Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama says, the procurement processes surrounding the national Cathedral lacks transparency.

In what seems to be an indictment on the managers of the project, the former president has called for halt and an audit of the monies committed to the project so far.

He has also called on government to stop using public funds to support the projects in this difficult times.

According to him, these are struggling times and as such the National Cathedral cannot still be a top priority of the government.

John Dramani Mahama believes that with the non-transparency of the processes and procurement associated with the project, there should rather be a value for money audit.

He says this after the audit, then believers who wish to contribute can do so without problems.

“The public funding of the national cathedral, particularly at this time, must stop. Being a Christian myself, and deeply appreciative of the centrality of God in nation building, I agree with most Ghanaians who believe that the project cannot constitute a top priority of government at this moment, warranting further injection of scarce public funds.

Because of the non-transparency of the processes and procurements associated with the project, I believe that the cathedral project should be subjected to a value for money audit in other to open the way for believers who wish to contribute to its construction to do so,” he said in a post shared on social media.

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised to build a national cathedral, a promise he made to God before he became president of the country.

He has therefore promised to carry through this promise even in these difficult times.

This has met the criticism of many Ghana, who believe the president priority is misplaced looking at the current economic circumstances.
