Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has said that since the NPP insists that the Russia/Ukraine war is the cause of Ghana’s current economic crisis, then sacking Ken Ofori-Atta would do nothing to fix the issue.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, October 26th 2022, Pratt quizzed the 80 majority MPs calling for Ken Ofori-Atta’s removal if removing the Finance Minister would solve the Russia/Ukraine war.
In his view, since we have been told ad infinitum that the war is the cause of our woes, there is no need to sack the Finance Minister since he is not responsible for the war.
“Now we have a situation where the so-called majority caucus has come to the realisation that our economy is not doing well. That the economy is not doing well partly, as a result of the incompetence of the managers of the economy. Now the singsong we have been hearing all this while is that the real cause of the problem is the Russia/Ukraine war,” Pratt Jnr said.
He continued: “Now I’m sitting here and I’m wondering how Ken Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu Boahen are responsible for the Russian/Ukrainian war. If the Russian/Ukrainian war is the main reason why we are here, why call for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu Boahen who have nothing to do with the Russian/Ukrainian war?”
On Tuesday, October 25th, over 80 members of the majority caucus in Parliament called for the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to be sacked.
According to them, getting rid of the minister would restore confidence in the ailing Ghanaian economy.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo is reported to have told the aggrieved MPs that he cannot sack Ofori-Atta presently as it would disrupt the government’s ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
