Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, says he understands the frustrations of members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).
Agyapong said he completely understands the challenges traders are facing due to the cedis freefall depreciation.
Speaking on Oman Fm, he said as a businessman himself, he has lost a fortune due to the situation but cannot speak up due to his position.
Mr Agyapong was speaking about the then-ongoing strike by GUTA, which saw the association closing down shops in Accra and Kumasi.
Traders said the rapidly depreciating cedi had jacked up their cost of importing goods and made it virtually impossible to turn a profit in their business.
They, therefore, embarked on a strike until the government would address their concerns.
Addressing the strike, Agyapong said he understands the plight of the traders because he finds himself in the same situation.
“Even me, I have really lost a lot of money due to the depreciation but I can’t talk because you know..” He said during the phone-in on Oman FM.
Eventually, GUTA decided to suspend their strike due to ‘goodwill’ with government.
The union in a statement said consultations with the government and Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II had led to the softening of its stance.
Citing goodwill from the government, the union said the government plans to put together a working committee made up of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, National security and GUTA, to “swiftly come out with pragmatic measures to solve the challenges.
