Former President John Dramani Mahama has again stirred controversy about government’s flagship policy Free Senior High School (Free SHS).
Addressing the 8th Biennial Delegate Conference of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) in Koforidua, the former president renewed his call for review of Free SHS, calling for a national stakeholders’ conference to evaluate the implementation of the Free SHS.
In his view, government has sacrifice quality for quantity by politicizing the implementation of the policy, bringing about challenges with feeding of boarding students.
“What is the use of education if it does not have the quality to give the learner a chance and opportunity in life? he asked.
Seeking support for his quest to review the policy which according to him has been bedeviled by challenges, which according to him is affecting the quality of education in the country he said,
“The time is now for us to rise to the occasion and collectively agree as actors in the political and developmental space on the need to depoliticize issues of urgent priority such as education delivery in our country.”
The former President said, the future NDC government would prioritize building strong foundation at the primary level.
“If you do not get it right at the primary and basic level, whatever you do at the secondary level is a wasted effort. You need to build a strong foundation at the basic level.”
He said, he admits that the Free SHS has come to stay and as such, the three pillars of education which are access, affordability and quality much not be compromised
