A former deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen, says he will personally ensure Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia beats Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten in the NPP Presidential Primaries.
Nana Obiri Boahen made these comments in reaction to bigoted comments from noted Alan Cash supporter and former NPP Parliamentary candidate, Hopeson Adorye.
Adorye recently sparked a furore after passing bigoted and tribalistic comments regarding Northerners in the NPP.
The ex-Kpone-Katamanso NPP Parliamentary candidate said that Northerners are only good to be running mates in the NPP and that the Presidency must only be passed around between the Danquah-Busia traditions of the party.
His comments were in support of his candidate, Alan Kyeremanten – representing the Busia tradition – to take over from President Nana Akufo-Addo, representing the Danquah tradition.
“As for the Dombos (Northerners), they are always there [as running mates],” Adorye said.
Reacting to the comments on Metro TV in Accra Monday, August 15th, Nana Obiri Boahen said he would do everything possible to make Dr Bawumia the victor in the upcoming Presidential primaries.
He rubbished claims from Hopeson Adorye that his comments have been taken out of context.
“I will not buy it. He uttered those words. The bottom line is that I am for Bawumia and I will make sure Bawumia wins. I can put my last pesewa that Bawumia is going to beat Alan Kyeremanten in Ashanti Region,” Obiri Boahen said.
Prompted that his comments possibly violate the party’s code of conduct surrounding the endorsement of candidates, Boahen said he’s only predicting the elections.
“I am making a prediction. I am saying a political clairvoyance. I can look into the crystal ball. I am making a prediction. Not now, I am talking about the future.
“If it happens in the forseeable future, if it happens that we are supposed to go to the primaries, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will beat Alan Kyeremanten in Ashanti Region hands down,” he added.
