Professor Ransford Gyampo, a professor of political science at the University of Ghana, Legon, has praised the first-term performance of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta but insists he has now lost the plot and must leave his post.
Professor Gyampo made this call during an appearance on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, November 12th 2022.
He said: “He has done his best in the first term, he did so well. I was surprised that a country like Ghana was adjudged one of the best growing economies in the world and he was the Finance Minister. He has done his best but we have gotten to the time where we need fresh ideas.”
Gyampo added: “We should not relent in our call for Mr Ofori-Atta to go…The time has come for the President to reshuffle especially at the Finance Minister,”
There have been growing calls for the Finance Minister to be sacked amidst the struggling Ghanaian economy.
The minority NDC in Parliament have moved a motion for censure against the Minister, with the majority refusing to support it.
Despite that, the majority NPP caucus also insist Ofori-Atta must be sacked but simply refuses to support the NDCs method.
Amidst all that, President Nana Akufo-Addo has refused to axe his cousin.
Commenting further on the President’s refusal to make a change, Professor Gyampo said if Ofori-Atta remains at post, the President would have proven himself more insensitive than ex-President Mahama.
“If he says that regardless of the national call, [he is] still going to keep him, then he will be more dead goat than John Mahama,” Prof Gyampo said.
“It was Mahama who said he was a dead goat and he was criticised for it. This call to sack Ofori-Atta is quite national. Not listening to the call will make him more dead goat than John Mahama.”
