Political Scientist and politician Dr. Richard Amoako Baah says demonstrations are necessary tools in a democracy.
According to him democracy is not always a smooth and quiet negotiations, as sometime requires fights.
Mr. Amoako Baah who was speaking on “What’s Going On” on Ultimate 106.9 FM made the comment with regards to the ‘Ku me Preko Demonstration held in Accra over the weekend.
“…Some people get upset because of demonstrations and the unrest, No, it’s all part of democracy. Democracy is not a very quiet system of negotiations, sometimes it takes even fight to bring about the results”
A section of Ghanaians on Saturday embarked on a protest dubbed ‘Kumi Preko reloaded’ in Accra.
It was an action to heap pressure on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to resign for his poor management of the Ghanaian economy.
Protesters marched through the principal streets of the capital Accra before ending at the Independence Square with placards and chants of Nana should resign.
Mr. Amoako Baah who is an ardent critic of the Akufo-Addo administration share why he could not join the demonstration.
Blaming the cost of transportation, especially airfare, he said the cost involved was deterrent hence his inability to join.
“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t joint the demonstration, they wanted me to join but it is too much trouble for an old going to Accra do the demonstration come back, are you driving or flying, right now you can’t fly, 1,700 cedis that’s the problem so I said no I can’t, if we get one in Kumasi, I will join you”
Ahead of the ‘kumi preko reloaded’ protest, one of its leaders, Lawyer Martin Kpebu, charged citizens to join the hundreds of protesters to register their displeasure over the hardship in the country.
