The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abronye DC, has taken a swipe at former President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of being greedy.
According to Abronye, Mahama currently earns a higher salary than the President yet still has the effrontery to be complaining that he’s not being paid the emoluments he’s owed.
He was responding to the former President’s claim that the state does not take care of his expenses as it’s supposed to, a statement he made to debunk an earlier wild claim from Abronye that the ex-President has received millions in ex-gratia since leaving office.
Speaking at a Press conference held in Accra on Monday, September 19th, Abronye DC said former President Mahama receives a higher salary than President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Bawumia and others because all government appointees took a 30% pay cut at the height of the country’s economic challenges.
“In 2021, we all saw in the Emolument Committees report and the salaries of ministers up to that of the president. As I speak today, John Dramani Mahama receives more salary than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He receives GH₵35,000 without a Cedi deduction but for Nana Akufo-Addo’s GH₵35,000, 30% percent is deducted from it and other government appointees also take the cut since 2021.
“So you [Mahama] who is sitting at home not working, when you are traveling the state funds it, your salary is bigger than that of President Akufo-Addo and his Vice Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ,” he charged.
Abronye made another charge against ex-President Mahama at the same press conference when he balked at the ex-President’s claim that he would review the Article 71 emoluments clause if reelected into office.
According to Abronye, Mahama had the chance to do so when he was in power and did nothing because contrary to his claims, he is actually in love with ex-gratia.
Abronye said if given the choice between his wife, Lordina Mahama and ex-gratia, Mahama would choose ex-gratia anytime.
“Because the former president wants to come to power again, he lies any time he gets the opportunity. Because he saw that Ghanaians are talking negatively about ex-gratia, he wants to take advantage of that by saying that he will cancel it.
“But we want Ghanaians to understand that if the former president has to choose between ex-gratia and Lordina, he will choose ex-gratia over Lordina. Because he loves ex-gratia so much.” Abronye said.
“The reason I’m saying this is that the former president in 2011, together will the late John Evans Atta Mills, came up with a white paper that said that ex-gratia was good after the constitutional review committee presented their report to them. But now Mahama is conveniently saying that he will review ex-gratia,” he added.
