Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed his motivation for leaving his cushy Bank of Ghana job to venture into politics close to two decades ago.
According to the Veep, his sole motivation for being in politics is to identify and solve problems in society and subsequently, help people.
Bawumia made the revelation during his interview with Kenyan television channel KTN News, a subsidiary of the Standard Media Group, which occurred during his recent trip to East Africa for the inauguration of the new Kenyan President.
“I enjoy what I do and I do find time to rest. The problems are so many and I am trying as much as possible to help my boss deal with a lot of these problems, because you inherit them and you would have to find solutions and for me that is why am in politics. Just to make sure you can help people solve problems and that is it,” he said.
Bawumia went on to speak on a major problem he sees in public administration in Africa, which is misdiagnosing the problems with society hence often prescribing the wrong solutions.
“As in many issues to deal with the economy, the solutions are not really rocket science in the sense that it is about diagnosing the problems in the first place. If you misdiagnose, you would mistreat it and not medicate properly and may worsen the problem. Understanding the problem properly through people who are experts in the field and you see the sense in the advice as a policy make and choose the way to go,” Dr Bawumia added.
The Ghanaian Vice President met the newly inaugurated Kenyan President William Ruto during his trip.
The two leaders held fruitful discussions centred on deepening the economic ties between the two nations.
“Yesteday, I attended the inauguration of H.E Dr. William Samoei Ruto, the 5th President of the Republic of Kenya. Dr. William Ruto, until his election on 15th August 2022, had served as a two-term Deputy President in Kenya from 2012-2022.
“It was such a colourful and moving ceremony which further entrenched the democratic credentials of Kenya. Today, I met with President Ruto at the State House on his first day at work and we had fruitful discussions on deepening the economic cooperation between Ghana and Kenya.
“Congratulations to President Ruto, Her Excellency Rachel Ruto (First Lady), H.E Rigathi Gachagua (Deputy President) and Her Excellency Mrs Dorcas Rigathi (Second Lady). May the good Lord protect and guide them as they begin their term of office.” Dr Bawumia wrote on Facebook following the meeting.
