The Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has told grieving victims of fetish priestess turned evangelist, Nana Agradaa, that the state has no obligation to save people from their own stupidity.
Bentil said there are serious issues to be solved as a nation and people who got duped due to their own stupidity are certainly not part of those huge problems.
His comments come after scores of followers of the charismatic evangelist were allegedly scammed by her after giving her money to ‘double’ for them.
On Saturday, October 8th, aggrieved followers of the born-again fetish priestess stormed her church premises demanding their monies.
Allegedly, Nana Agradaa had advertised that she was going to double the monies of church members.
Thousands gave her money on Friday to double but received nothing in return, leading to them besieging the church Saturday.
Following the commotion, police arrested Nana Agradaa.
Reacting to the scandal, the IMANI Africa Vice President expressed no sympathy for the duped.
“Freedom requires responsibility !!! The State has no duty to save a person from their own stupidity. We should focus on solving real problems not plain stupidity.” Bentil wrote in reaction to the news.
Meanwhile, the police have called for any alleged victim of Agradaa to come forward and aid in investigations.
“Anyone who is a victim of the alleged money doubling scam should report to the Accra Regional Police Command for further action to assist the investigation”, police said in a statement.
Nana Agradaa, a one-time traditional priestess, is widely known for her moneymaking ritual, ‘sika gari’ in the past.
She was some time back arrested for operating two TV channels – Thunder TV and Ice1 TV – that allegedly broadcast money-doubling content at Kasoa in the Central Region without licenses and contrary to section 137 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960.
It followed concerns about the broadcasting of inappropriate content in the media space by persons parading themselves as spiritualists.
She was later convicted and sentenced to a fine of GHS36,000 on the charge of operating a Television station without a licence, and GHS10,000 on the charge of “charlatanic advertisement”.
The repented priestess now operates a church, Heaven Way Church in Weija, Accra where this latest allegation of scam is said to have occurred.
