The National Communication Authority (NCA) will from Monday September 5, 2022 begin rolling out punitive measures against SIM card holders who have not registered their card.
In communique dated September 2, 2022, giving direction to Mobile Network Operators, the Authority outlined the measures that is to be rolled out.
“The national Communication Authority refers to the on-going SIM Registration exercise which is scheduled to end on 30th September, 2022.
“Please be informed that the punitive measures which were discussed at the meeting at the NCA on 3rd August, 2022, were compiled and reviewed following your Submissions. After a comprehensive review, and with the approval of the Honourable Minister for Communication and Digitalization.”the statement added.
The proposed punitive measures target subscribers who are just to complete their registration and those who have not gone through the process at all.
Some of the measure includes restricting data and call services for up to 48 hours once a week for the first phase of the measures.
The Authority however assures the public that, persons who fail to register their sim card by 30th September will have their SIM cards completely blocked.
Operators in the telecommunication sector includes the MTN, AirtelTigo, Vodafone, Glo, Telesol, Busy and Surfeline who provide data and call services.
