President Akufo-Addo Addo has appointed Dr. Eric Nkansah to act as the new Director General of the Ghana Education Service.
According to the appointment letter signed by the secretary to the president, Dr. Nkansah’s appointment will be fully confirmed after advice from the Governing Council of the GES in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
His appointment takes immediate effect and it comes following the sacking of the former Director General, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa.
On Tuesday, the president through a letter issued by his secretary terminated the secondment of Prof. Opoku-prempeh from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Per the letter, the exigencies that required his skills and expertise no longer exist and he was asked to go back to his lecturing job at the KNUST.
The letter also noted that the extension of his secondment beyond three years was illegal.
However, many people believe that the real reason for his sack was his seeming frosty relationship with the sector minister, Dr. Yaw Adutwum.
Prof. Opoku-Amankwa on at least two occasions had a public disagreement with the minister. At one point, he had a media interview and suggested that the controversial free SHS policy was being reviewed to ensure that parents take up certain costs. He was immediately summoned to the office of the president over the matter and prevailed upon to retract the comments.
Until his appointment, Dr. Nkansah has been a special assistant to the Minister.
