The Managing Director of the Intercity STC Company, Nana Akomea, has said that the National Communications Authority (NCA) is right to block the SIM card of Ghanaians because people would always find an excuse if allowed to do anything of their free will.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program, he said if the state does not enforce the regulations, people will never feel compelled to do the right thing.
“If you don’t do the registration by the end of this month, it is your own problem . . . there are some people who if you don’t compel them, they will never do anything,” Nana Akomea said.
In response to concerns that some Ghanaians are yet to receive their Ghana cards from the National Identification Authority (NIA) despite having registered, he said that is their own problem and not that of the country.
Akomea expressed zero sympathy for such people and said they should still be blocked because the alternative is to never take measures that will force Ghanaians to register.
“So, what should we do? We shouldn’t do the registration? We shouldn’t have a deadline? We should just leave people because everybody will then come up with an excuse?”, he bristled.
NCA Suspends Blocking of SIM Cards
Akomea’s comments come after telcos halted the ongoing blockage of sim cards belonging to Ghanaians who have yet to register their numbers with a Ghana Card.
The decision to cease the ongoing blockade was reportedly reached due to heavy public backlash against the move, according to a Citinewsroom report.
Telcos started implementing punitive measures against unregistered sim cards from Monday, September 5th 2022 on the back of a directive from the industry regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA).
Ghanaians who had their SIM cards unregistered were barred from making calls and accessing other services on certain days of the week.
The exercise immediately ran into problems as multiple Ghanaians who had registered had their numbers barred.
Others who were yet to register bitterly complained over the National Identification Authority (NIA)’s inability to provide them with their Ghana cards on time.
After intense public backlash, the exercise has been suspended.
The u-turn also comes after political activist and leader of The People’s Project, Kwame Asare Obeng aka Kwame A Plus, dragged the government to court over the sim re-registration exercise.
