Male students of the University of Ghana’s Halls of Residence Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth have taken their Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo to the cleaners over what they say is her “dictatorial mobutu-Agorkoli-style” leadership of the Tertiary institution.
The male students known for rowdy behaviour on the campus are aggrieved about a University decision to return to In-Out-Out policy for continuing students of the two halls that excludes female students of Mensah Sarbah.
Management of the University, on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, revoked the accommodation of members of the Commonwealth Hall and male residents of the Mensah Sarbah hall after the latest clashes involving these two halls on campus.
In a statement signed by the Registrar of the University, these students “are to be randomly assigned to available rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels
Management of the University has also announced that the traditional halls on campus, i.e., Commonwealth Hall, Akuafo Hall, Mensah Sarbah Hall, Legon Hall, and Volta Hall, will be reserved for level 100 and graduate students.
The statement signed by the Registrar of the University on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, indicated that a full in-out-out-out policy is expected to be culminated by 2025/2026.
Agorkoli Mobutu VC
The students in various interviews called out the Vice Chancellor as not being mother figure. This is after an attempt to hold a joint presser was scuttled by police and University security officials.
“Everyone knows we don’t have a VC. We have queen Agorkoli running the University like Mobutu Seseko. If we were her children will she behave the way she’s behaving”, a student with red t-shirt clad over his head for fear of victimization said.
“As for the Presss Conference, we will hold it. We will show them that we are not joking.” He added.
Some concerned students of the two halls have pledged to access their rooms next academic year despite the University management’s decision to sack all male residents out of the halls from the 2022/2023 academic year.
