The government of Ghana has channelled the controversial Ghc 80m initially earmarked for the National Cathedral into the communication and road sectors.
This was revealed in Parliament on Wednesday, December 21st 2022 during the budget approval debate held on the floor of the house.
This was after Minority MPs on the joint committee of Trade, Industry and Tourism rejected the budgetary allocation of Ghc 80m to be used for the National Cathedral, winning the procedural vote by 11 to 10.
Speaking to Citi News, a member of the Trades and Industry Committee of Parliament, Dr. Dominic Ayine said the Minority would only approve the budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Tourism without the allocated funds to the National Cathedral.
“This afternoon, a joint committee of Youth and Sports, as well as Trades and Industry, met and took the decision by an 11-10 majority to reject the budget estimates of the Ministry of Tourism especially the allocation of GH¢80million for the construction of the National Cathedral.” Ayine had said.
Reacting to the development, Member of Parliament for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said “Government compelled to withdraw and reallocate the obnoxious and dubious GHS80million for President Akufo-Addo’s Cathedral to the Roads and Communications sectors.
“We won this battle for God and the suffering masses. Thank you all for your unflinching support.”
