The President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, has called on the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, to desist from using public funds to construct his cathedral.
The Dormaahene said the President made a pledge to God to build a Cathedral hence he should find resources elsewhere and not use the funds of Ghanaians who are in severe economic distress.
He called for the Catheral project to be put on hold for now and for the President to focus on fixing the country.
He made this known to the Regional Minister, Justina Owusu-Banahene at a general meeting on Tuesday, December 20.
“You talked to God to build a national cathedral in his honour if you won the election. It is a good thing to do. However, given the economic difficulties Ghanaians are facing around this time, the people have asked me to tell you to put the project on hold. It is your initiative and no one can take that away from you but don’t use the national coffers to build the cathedral.
“Tell him to focus on economic recovery so that in good times even if he is not able to complete it, any of his brothers could do so. That is what Ghanaians want me to tell you,” he said.
However, President Akufo-Addo has so far indicated no intention of putting the project on hold despite the country’s perilous economic condition that has seen it forced to default on its debt.
In recent speeches, he said the Cathedral remains necessary as a thank you to God for sparing Ghana from civil wars and said those against its construction are like the biblical Sanballat and Tobias.
“Just like Sanballat and Tobias, in the days of Nehemiah, there are some who do not share my views on the building of the National Cathedral, I respect their right to differ but I am confident (of) my decision, by the vast numbers of enthusiastic supporters of this project whose spiritual dimension is limitless”, the President said on Sunday, December 18, 2022, when he delivered an address at the centenary celebration of the Ga Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, held at the Black Star Square, Accra.
