Ghanaians are about to enjoy a bit of relief from the recent economic uptick as a decrease in transport fares has been announced by road transport operators.
Road transport operators including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have announced a 15.3 per cent reduction in fares.
The new fares take effect from Monday, December 19th 2022 and will cover shared taxis, intra-city and intercity transport as well as haulage.
This announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday, December 16.
The statement was released following a crunch meeting between stakeholders in the sector held after calls heightened for the downward review of fares due to the recent marginal reduction in prices of petroleum products.
“We kindly request all commercial transport operators to comply with the new fares and post same at their loading terminals,” the joint statement said.
“We further request all operators, commuters and the general public to kindly cooperate for the successful implementation of the new fares.”
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) increased transport fares by 19% in October over fuel price hikes.
