The Former President, John Dramani Mahama has admitted that Covid-19 and the recent Russia-Ukraine war is having a grave impact on global economy which Ghana is not left out.
These recent comments are in contrast with his long held position that, government of Ghana cannot blame the current economic challenges in the country on Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine.
Former President Mahama in an interview with Straight Talk Africa on VOA news said, the meltdown that has impacted the global economy has taken a toll on Africa and Ghana as well.
Asked about the impact of global economic happenings in the exclusive interview, the former President said, “I think it’s a great period of adversity for the whole world because it is triggering a kind of global recession.”
His statement contradicts previous assertions he made which blamed President Akufo-Add and his government for the current economic challenges.
The former NDC Presidential Candidate has insisted the Government cannot blame the Covid-19 and Russia Ukraine war crisis for economic woes and that it is as a result of mismanagement.
“The incontrovertible fact is that, Ghana is in a mess due to BAD POLICIES of this government, which have contributed massively to the dire state of affairs”, he said in a facebook post.
He has also taken on the IMF Boss Kristalina Georgieva for corroborating government position that external factors are the cause of the current economic crisis.
In a reaction to the IMF Boss, the former President said, “the consequences of the government policies such as the botched, insensitive and dubious cost in closing down locally won banks, unbridled corruption and lack of accountability including the mismanagement of COVID-19 funds, unconventional borrowing practices riddled with opaqueness and conflicts of interest, resulting in an unsustainable debt envelope, costly, experimental and untested programmes, etc.., cannot be ignored in understanding the current dire state of the Ghanaian Economy.”
The acceptance of COVID-19 and Russia Ukraine War in the recent interview with VOA, which he said triggered global recession is contrary to his insistence of Government mismanagement being the cause of economic crisis in Ghana.
