Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono Region Kwame Baffoe known popularly as Abronye DC has asked the President to demote security officials in the ‘galamstop’ operation.
According to him it will be the right call for the President to reduce the ranks of all security personnel charged with fighting galamsey.
He said security personnel who were assembled in the operation ‘galamstop’ need to be sanctioned because the task given to them were not achieved.
“We tasked these security personnel with protecting our forest reserves and water bodies. What we have to do now is to put the KPIs on the board and check if they have achieved their targets. If the water bodies have not regained their natural colourless state, then we reduce their ranks,” he said.
He indicated that this will be a deterrent to others so that when they are sent on a mission, they do not capitalize on it to make money for themselves at the expense of the country.
Abronye could not fathom why there is a supply of mercury in the country when there is a fight against illegal mining.
“There is a fight against galamsey but there is an abundance of mercury and the mercury does not come from rain, it is imported so if we can fight galamsey, we need to ensure that mercury does not enter this country. If we allow mercury in the country, then the fight will fail,” he said on Accra-based Neat FM.
