The former Member of Parliament for Tema East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Honourable Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has blamed elements within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as to why it is difficult to win the fight against galamsey.
Speaking on Adom TV, he said whenever the President or national officials send in law enforcement to combat the menace, those at the local level such as MMDCEs and Regional Ministers fail to maintain order once the national officers leave.
He also implicated some officials in the party for benefiting from the menace.
“The difficulty is our own people in there. My own NPP people. Do you think I am afraid to talk about it? It is my own NPP people who are making the fight against galamsey difficult. It is a fact. The law says don’t mine on our river bodies. If the soldiers are sent in to drive away the galamseyers and they leave, the District Security Council led by the MCE what do they do?
“The Regional Security Council is also responsible for security at that level what do they do? So every time soldiers have to be moved from Accra to these areas to fight the menace? That is not good,” he fumed.
President Meets National House of Chiefs On Galamsey Menace
President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed how difficult the fight against illegal mining, also known as galasmey has been during a meeting with the National House of Chiefs on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.
“Since I assumed office in 2017 I have made it a central feature of my presidency to lead in the efforts to rid our country of this menace, which we all now call galamsey. Indeed, it was an important aspect of my inaugural address of that day”.
“It has not been popular, and we have not got the immediate results that I was looking for,” he added.
The President expressed his commitment to fulfilling the promise he made to Ghanaians to bring an end to the menace.
“I ask you all to join hands with me in the fight against illegal mining, in order to bring an end to the devastation of our landscape and the pollution of water bodies. We have to win that fight to keep our environment clean and protect our land and waters,” he told the chiefs.
