The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament MP) for Builsa South, Dr Clement Apaak, has called for the Chairman of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi, to be arrested.
According to him, the NPP politician is engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) hence he should be arrested rather than being directed to stop work.
His comments come after the Lands Ministry ordered Akonta Mining Limited, a company owned by Chairman Wontumi, to stop operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest.
This came after two people were shot at Samreboi in the Western Region after a group of youth allegedly prevented Akonta Mining Limited personnel from sending more mining equipment into the Tano Nimri Forest reserve.
Reacting to the Lands Ministry order, Dr Apaak said it is clear that the NPP politician is engaged in galamsey and hence must be arrested and prosecuted rather than being ‘ordered’ to cease operations.
However, Dr Apaak said that will never happen because the NPP needs Wontumi to keep mining to raise funds for the party.
“Wontumi is mining in a forest reserve, arrest and prosecute him, you are directing that his company be made to cease forthwith by the same Forestry Commission which has looked on. Is he above the law? What fight, it’s a hoax, party hia sika!” he said.
